What Is ILAW Format? Complete Guide to I-L-A-W

Intentions, Learning Experiences, Assessment, Ways Forward — the complete guide for DepEd MATATAG teachers

The ILAW lesson plan format is the new standard for public school teachers under the DepEd MATATAG curriculum. Introduced through DepEd Order 16 s.2026, it replaces the older DLL (Daily Lesson Log) and DLP (Daily Lesson Plan) formats.

In this guide, you'll learn what ILAW stands for, how it works, and how to write each section effectively.

What Does ILAW Stand For?

ILAW is a Filipino word meaning "light" — and it spells out the four sections of the new lesson plan format:

  • I — Intentions
  • L — Learning Experiences
  • A — Assessment
  • W — Ways Forward

I — Intentions

The Intentions section defines what students should know, understand, and be able to do by the end of the lesson. This includes Learning Competency (from MATATAG CG) with code, specific learning objectives (2-3 measurable outcomes), and connection to previous learning.

L — Learning Experiences

This section outlines the activities and teaching strategies that will help students achieve the learning intentions. Design principles include Clear Goals, Scaffolding, Checks for Understanding, Active Retrieval, Social Learning, Values & Purpose, and Inclusion.

A — Assessment

Assessment describes how you'll check whether students have achieved the learning intentions. This can include formative assessments (during the lesson) and summative assessments (after the lesson).

W — Ways Forward

Ways Forward outlines next steps: remediation for students who need extra help, enrichment for those who mastered the content, and connections to future lessons.

How Is ILAW Different from DLL/DLP?

The ILAW format simplifies lesson planning by focusing on the core teaching-learning-assessment cycle. Unlike the older DLL (which required extensive weekly logs) and DLP (which required minute-by-minute procedures), ILAW emphasizes outcomes and flexibility.
